Introduction
When you need to build a website, one of the first questions that usually comes up is:
WordPress or a custom-built site?
It’s a legitimate question, but in most cases it’s asked at the wrong time.
And this is exactly why many websites, although technically well made, fail to deliver real business results.
The real problem is not the technology
In my work, I often encounter two recurring scenarios:
• WordPress sites overloaded with plugins, visually polished but confusing, that generate no leads
• Expensive custom-built sites that fail to communicate value and do not support the business
In both cases, the technology itself is not wrong.
It is wrong in relation to the actual goals of the project.
Why starting from technology is a mistake
When you start with the question “WordPress or custom?” without first clarifying:
• what the website must achieve
• who it should speak to
• what role it plays in the business
you risk investing time and budget in the wrong direction.
Technology should be a consequence of strategy, not the starting point.
When WordPress really makes sense
WordPress is an extremely flexible platform and, when part of a clear strategy, it can become a powerful business tool.
It makes sense when:
• the website needs to evolve over time
• autonomy in content management is required
• the goal is clear communication and lead generation
The problem is not WordPress.
The problem is using it without strategic direction.
When a custom website is the right choice
A custom-built website makes sense only in well-defined contexts:
• complex projects
• advanced integrations
• non-standard requirements
A custom website alone does not guarantee results.
Without a clear vision, it remains a technical investment, not a business asset.
The right question to ask
Before asking which technology to use,
ask yourself what your business needs to achieve through the website.
Only then does it make sense to choose the most suitable technical solution.
Conclusion
Technology comes after strategy.
An effective website is not the most complex one,
but the one that truly works for your business.
Is your website a cost or an investment today?
If you want to understand whether your technology choices are aligned with your business goals, the first step is strategy, not code.
